Getting Started

Getting started couldn't be easier: come along to one of our regular sessions - it costs £10 for a drop-in session - and give it a go.

  • If you live in West London, come along on Saturday morning to St Ethereda's Church:
    • 9:30-10:30 - all ages
  • If you live in the Godalming area, come along to Rodborough Technology College
    • Children: Tuesday evening, 5.00-5.45 pm
    • Adults: Wednesday evening, 7.45-9.15 pm

(These classes run during school term time only. Check the Club Calendar for variations... or get in touch)

Tips:

  • Try and get there a little early - about 15 minutes before the class begins would be perfect
  • You don't need any special equipment - just wear loose clothing
  • Shoes, socks and jewellery come off for training

What to expect in your first karate class

The class starts with everyone lining up, with black belts at one end and white belts at the other. You'll be at the end of the line beside the white belts.

Then there's a warn up. If you haven't exercised for a while, take it easy.

Once the warm-up is complete, the class proper starts.

Every class is different.

At times you'll be asked to sit down. Don't feel short-changed, as this is also an important part of the lesson:

  • You will sit cross-legged, which is intended to stretch your knee joins
  • You will be able to watch others, and learn from them

We do use some japanese words, the most important being "Oss", which means "yes". (Don't worry about learning the word for "no" - you'll never need it in a karate lesson!)
